Early pregnancy detection matters. The first few weeks of pregnancy are critical to fetal development, and early prenatal care is important for a healthy birth weight and the baby’s survival. Things to Know About Testing Early
Some pregnant women may not have detectable amounts of the pregnancy hormone in their urine on the day they use the test. The amount of pregnancy hormone increases as the pregnancy progresses.
In laboratory testing, the FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test detected the pregnancy hormone levels in:
- 60% of pregnant women, 5 days before their expected period
- 86% of pregnant women, 4 days before their expected period
- 96% of pregnant women, 3 days before their expected period
- >99% of pregnant women, 2 days before their expected period, 1 day before, and on the day of their expected period
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test work?
FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine. hCG is the hormone your body produces during pregnancy.
When can I test with FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test?
The FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test detects hCG as early as 6 days before your missed period (5 days before the day of the expected period). The amount of pregnancy hormone increases as pregnancy progresses. In laboratory testing with early pregnancy urine samples, FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test gave the following results:
NUMBER OF DAYS BEFORE THE EXPECTED PERIOD | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
% OF SAMPLES FROM PREGNANT WOMEN GIVING A POSITIVE RESULT | 76% | 96% | >99% | >99% | >99% |
What do I do if the result on the Display Screen is "YES+" (pregnant)?
A “YES+” test result shows that the pregnancy hormone (hCG) was detected, which normally indicates pregnancy. You must see your doctor to confirm that you are pregnant. If you test positive but think you may not be pregnant, you should check with your doctor.
What do I do if the result on the Display Screen is "NO-" (not pregnant)?
You may not be pregnant, or it may be too early to tell. If you do not get your period within 7 days, you should retest with another FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test. It is possible that you miscalculated the length of your cycle, or your urine may not have had enough pregnancy hormone for the test to register a “YES+” result. If upon retesting, you get another “NO-” result and your period has still not started, you should call your doctor.
The blinking clock has disappeared followed by a "?" on the Display Screen. What does this mean?
A “?” symbol indicates an error has occurred during testing. You should retest with another FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test, carefully following all directions.
The display screen is blank. What is wrong?
If the display screen goes blank at any time before yielding a result, an error has occurred. You should retest with another FIRST RESPONSE™ Digital Pregnancy Test, carefully following all directions.
How long will my pregnancy test result show on the display screen?
Your pregnancy test result will be displayed for at least 30 minutes on the digital screen. Read your results within this timeframe. Once you have read your result, discard the stick.
Note: This device contains a battery with a removal feature on the reverse side of the thumb grip. Be sure to dispose of the battery according to local regulations.
What will happen if the plastic test holder gets wet?
Some splashing while using the test is expected, but if the test becomes very wet it can become damaged. If damage occurs, the display screen will either go blank or an error “?” message will appear.
Do any drugs or medications affect the digital pregnancy test?
Medications containing the pregnancy hormone (hCG) can affect the result (e.g., A.P.L.3, Pregnyl4, Profasi5 and Pergonal5). The test should not be affected by hormone therapies containing Clomiphene citrate (e.g., Clomid6 and Serophene5); alcohol; painkillers; antibiotics; or the contraceptive pill.
I removed the pregnancy test from the wrapper and the clock symbol appeared on the Display Screen, but I'm not ready to use the test. What should I do?
Once removed from the wrapper, the pregnancy test must be used within 12 hours. Keep the device dry before use.
Do First Response pregnancy tests expire?
Yes, pregnancy tests do expire. An expired pregnancy test may not provide reliable results and could lead to false positives or negatives. The expiration date for First Response pregnancy tests can vary between 2-3 years, depending on the specific test:
Digital Pregnancy Test: 24 months
Early Result Pregnancy Test: 24 months
Rapid Result Pregnancy Test: 27 months
Strips: 24 months (included in the Comfort Check Pregnancy Test Kit)
Easy Cup: 24 months (included in the Multi Check Pregnancy Test Kit)
Please make sure to check the expiration date on all First Response products before use. The expiration date on First Response pregnancy tests is located on the individual wrapper of each test and the bottom of each box. If the expiration date has passed, please discard the test and use a non-expired test to test if you are pregnant.
